Esenboğa maintains its position as a carbon neutral airport
TAV Esenboğa sustains its carbon emission at the optimum level through energy efficiency. As part of Airport Carbon Accreditation Program held by Airports Council International (ACI), Esenboğa Airport renewed its carbon neutral airport license this year, of which the company was awarded in 2014.
Operated by TAV Airports, Ankara Esenboğa Airport renewed its carbon neutral airport certification one more time this year. Esenboğa Airport was first awarded the certification in 2014 as part of Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program held by ACI, the main organization of airport operators. Neutralizing its carbon emissions, which is the main reason for climate change, Esenboğa Airport offset the remaining amount by investing to clean energy. Esenboğa Airport, which is the first airport in Turkey that achieves to reach this level and is listed amongst the top 27 environmentally-friendly airports worldwide, continues its efforts.
TAV Esenboğa General Manager Nuray Demirer stated: “TAV Airports adopted an environmentally- and socially-friendly and also a sustainable business model. Whilst increasing the passenger satisfaction and service quality, we have the goal to decrease our environmental impacts to the minimum level. As a result of the works performed on energy efficiency, we are glad to sustain our carbon neutral airport title since 2014."
TAV has actively been participating in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program of ACI since 2009. Ankara Esenboğa and Izmir Adnan Menderes airports minimized their carbon emissions to the optimum level and listed amongst world's top 27 environmentally-friendly airports. Whilst Istanbul Atatürk Airport also participated in the program, TAV-operated Enfidha Airport in Tunisia was the first airport certified in the Africa continent.
176 airports participating in Airport Carbon Accreditation Program consist of approximately 40 percent of world's air traffic by hosting almost 2 billion passengers.
Providing service to 12.3 million passengers and approximately 88,000 flights in 2015, Esenboğa Airport commenced a series of practices in order to use the energy efficiently without compromising the passenger comfort. Automatic lighting control, using LED fixtures, trigeneration plant producing power, heating and cooling energy from natural gas are the examples of these practices.
