Esenboğa first carbon-neutral airport in Turkey
TAV Esenboğa optimized carbon emissions and offset the remaining amount by investing in clean energy. Esenboğa Airport has reached the top level amongst in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program –initiated by ACI Europe.
Operated by TAV Airports, Ankara Esenboga Airport neutralized its carbon emissions, which is the driving factor in climate change. Esenboga became the first airport in Turkey to reach this level. The gateway to the Turkish capital, Esenboga is now listed amongst the 17 airports to achieve carbon-neutrality worldwide.
“Our business model takes sustainability as a core value. Whilst increasing passenger satisfaction and service quality, we aim to limit our environmental effects. In Esenboga, CO2 emissions per passenger decreased by 10 per cent in 2013 compared to the previous year, as a result of our efforts to increase energy efficiency” said Nuray Demirer, TAV Esenboğa General Manager.
“The remaining part is offset in cooperation with a hydroelectric power plant. This way, we supported clean energy production that covers the CO2 amount released to the atmosphere in 2013 as a result of our operations. We are glad to be a pioneering brand in Turkey in this area. We aim at creating the highest value for all our stakeholders, while benefiting the society in general."
TAV has been actively participating in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program, which is initiated by ACI Europe, the umbrella organization of airport operators. Participating in the program with Istanbul Ataturk, Ankara Esenboğa and Izmir Adnan Menderes airports in Turkey, TAV is the first airport operator certified in the continental Africa by Enfidha Airport in Tunisia.
Providing service to 10,928,000 passengers last year, Esenboğa Airport commenced a series of practices in order to use the energy efficiently without compromising the passenger comfort. Automatic lighting control, using LED fixtures, trigeneration plant producing power, heating and cooling energy from natural gas can be listed as examples of these practices.
As a result of these practices, which were audited by independent institutions, Esenboğa Airport certified with the level of 3+ in the Airport Carbon Accreditation program. There are only 17 airports reaching this level throughout the world. 10 airports in Sweden, two airports in each of Norway, Holland and Italy as well as Esenboğa in Turkey qualified for this certification.
As of June 2014, 102 airports at four continents participate in the program. These airports participating in the program represent 23.6 per cent of global passenger traffic. As a result of the works performed, member airports decreased their carbon emissions by 133,599 tons in total. This amount is equal to the carbon dioxide amount absorbed by 3,400,000 trees in 10 years.
